Rachel's book cover

For my vector project I initially wanted to recreate the album cover art of one of my favorite bands Brand New. The album was called Daisy, taken from one of their hit songs. In this song the lead singer is attempting to define himself through imagery of nature and animals. Most of them are negative which is one of the reasons why the fox on the front of the album is rabid. That symbolizes passion and madness. I ended up creating my own book cover that is based off of the album. I wanted to define myself using the same type of imagery and title. The background of my project is basically the same as on the Daisy album, I took it myself at the Grand Canyon, along with the eyes at the top. I wanted to use eyes because I think that they can say a lot about a person. I tried to make them red like the foxes but it made my book seem like a horror story, so instead I bloated the center to make it look more animalistic and distorted the size. I added red daisies on the side to relate back to the red eyes and using nature. I wanted to use a very simple yet elegant text for my title because the cover was already full of detail and the text on the album is simple too. I renamed my book Shooting Daisies for a couple of different reasons. To me, daisies mean anything that is beautiful or pure, which is what I try to capture or “shoot” with my photography. Second, daisies symbolize gentleness and innocence which is also what a lamb represents which is what my name means. Red daisies represent beauty that is unknown to the possessor, which to me represents photos that I have not taken, or potential that I don’t see yet.

  1. I really like this one, especially the eyes part. Also I like the forest background. But I think you should change the font of the title, it looks a little bite weird or maybe change the composition of it.

  2. I absolutely love the idea behind your book cover. Brand New happens to be one of my favorite bands as well. The fact that every piece of your cover means something to you or what you were going for makes this out to be a really interesting composition and idea. The eyes really make the image, I feel like I could be staring at a real person when I look at them. The only critique I do have is the font style and color. I feel like it is somewhat out of place. Maybe if you worked more with it and tried to get the font to somehow work with the image or be apart of the image, that could be really cool.

  3. This is a really cool project and I love the amount of symbolism in the cover. All the images are symbols that hint at representing you. There is not much I don't like, maybe just bring up the opacity on the daisies, I did not see them at first.

  4. I originally believed the cover to be too simple, but after reading your intro/explanation it fits the concept almost all too well. I really like how much thought was placed into the theme and concept of the book. It is simple, yet effective which is what I value.

  5. I like how your cover is a compilation of bits and pieces of you, how you have personal reasons behind each part. I also like that you added your own photography!

  6. The eyes are nice. I like how they look innocent but, in a sense, disturbed at the same time, as if possessing some ferocity. The background definitely communicates nature. However, I believe the "daisies" aspect of your piece needs to be emphasized more. I am also curious of how the text would look centered. On than that, great piece.

  7. I like this CD cover, but I wonder if the eyes would stand out more if they were a deep muddy redish brown, kind of like a dark brick color. I also am not sure about the almost invisible flowers in the lower right corner. I would like it more if they were slightly more opaque.
