For my book project I chose to design my own cover for the Necronomicon. The Necronomicon is a fictional book found in the writing of H.P. Lovecraft. It is a collection of insane creatures and cosmic terrors. I wanted to do a project to reflect that. I made the background black and filled it with eyes of varying size and angles to give it an ominous depth as if things were looking at you from the darkness. Then two large main eyes and a mouth to show that it is all one large entity that we can only see a portion of. I put a persons silhouette in the mouth as if about to be swallowed showing how insignificant people are to these monsters because that is a common theme in the writings. The person also has an eye on their chest because to know about these monsters and to see them is to be consumed by them. Also tentacles coming out of the eyes to further the twisted nature of the thing on the cover.
The create the image was simple. I simply found images a red eye and yellow eye online, then copied and distorted them untill the black background was covered. The inside of the mouth was created with a gradient then teeth were added to the top and bottom. I copied and distorted some tentacles over eyes to make them look like they were growing out of them. Some I blacked out and added around the man's silhouette to make it look like they were swallowing him. Finally I just added some text for the title and distorted it to make it look creepy.
I could tell that this was your project without seeing your name because it has your personal style. Great job with the eyes, I really feel like I am being watched.

ReplyDeleteI like it before I even read the title I got a very Lovecrafty feel from it. i only thing that feels a little odd is the amount of color in it I wonder what it would look like ether black and white or just muted a bit.
ReplyDeleteI love the creepy sense it gives me and the way that every piece of this artwork has a purpose and a meaning. Nothing is just randomly placed. I also like the fact that you gave the entire thing a main face, which creates a feel of mystery and unknowningness. I think you did awesome.
ReplyDeleteI like the contrast between the animal eyes in the middle section and the shocked human eye right above it. When I travel through the piece slowly with my eyes, I can see multiple creatures in different ways, having that mouth. The only thing I would consider adjusting is that eye on the figure's chest. I wonder how it would look if it was like that middle eye above.
