Taylor Loutsis :: East of Eden Book Cover

Anyone who has read East of Eden, outside of the classroom, should know why it would be chosen as anyone's favorite book. It had a lasting impression on me though due to the timing of when I decided to read it, which would make it a bit more influential than the average reader. While I was reading the book my parents were going through a divorce which lead to newly revealed personalities of people I grew up with. East of Eden has too many concepts or ideas to narrow in on one, but the character development of one man who was decisive and figured out what/where he wanted to go, without wealth, and another man who was indecisive beyond words, with wealth...was exactly how and who someone close to me transformed from and then to.
As for my book cover, I took an image from google images of a mountain and live traced it. I then took the image and altered the hues and values to match a more "old fashioned" look... or cowboy-ish look. I then wanted to have a valley be the central area or core to the cover since Eden in the novel and in everyone's mind is a place of great wealth. It models freedom too. An open valley is a perfect example of just that. I then found a windmill to seal the deal with the imagery/landscape theme. I then placed a shadow of the windmill with the pen tool. The typography colors chosen were intended to wrap the colors together.

  1. I really like the unity of your cover. The colors bring the whole thing together and it looks like a professional book cover. The only thing I would change is maybe crop out the top of the image. There is so much activity in the middle and bottom that the dark blue section doesn't seem to belong.

  2. I like it, I like the way you design the background color. I also like that you changed the "Eden" color and make it different form the "East of ". Looks so cool

  3. This one is probably my favorite. It is so simple but yet draws the viewer in. After seeing this I actually did research to see what the book was about so I think you did a great job. A lot of depth

  4. While this piece is simple it is also very interesting. I get the feeling of the midwest from the image which I find interesting since the title indicates east. The only thing I might change is to move the title to the right side to indicate that it is, in fact, the east.

  5. I really love the composition of this piece. The location of the text and the way the windmill and it's shadow kind of frame the title really call for my attention. The one thing that I would change is the dark blue at the top of the piece. It looks blocky and somewhat out of place compared to the other shades of blue.

  6. You did a great a job of making the composition flow. What impresses me the most is how you did the title because it's very unique. The title looks like its in the background as an object itself and putting it in on the side makes the composition interesting. Job well done.
