Raster Project 1. Mill Avenue by Michelle Bailey

For my raster project I wanted to create the illusion of time and space by showing a self-made panoramic view of a corner on Mill Avenue. I made the image using night and day photography so I could piece together an all around view on Mill and the action that takes place during the evening and during the day. I made the overlapping images square and choppy because I like the effect it gives by showing Mill as a place with an overwhelming difference of people and all around atmosphere. Mill Avenue always has a wide range of people walking around, shops to look at, and ascetics of certain corners.  So I made my image represent the different aspects of Mill by overlapping all of the different views you see when going to Mill Avenue.

To create this image I first made a canvas size that was very wide because I knew I wanted to go for the panoramic view. Then I went to Mill Avenue around 10 am one day and I used my digital camera and my tripod to capture a bunch of different images of Mill. After capturing those images I did the same thing but this time I went at 10pm on a Thursday night. After I got all of the images I knew I wanted to use I uploaded all of them on Photoshop and starting cropping and overlapping images onto different layers. If I did not like an image on top of another one, I would just change the order of the layers. Then I did a little bit of blending effects, but not much because I liked the choppy view of each layer on top of the other. After I had finished overlapping all of the images I edited the contrast, brightness, and saturation of the image to complete it.

  1. This piece reminds me of a procure or some sort of attraction trying to bring people to Tempe. I really like the contrast from the light of day to dark at night and how the atmosphere changes so rapidly.

  2. This is an awesome collage/panorama. I love that you pieced together different parts of Mill Ave and made it look like one panoramic image. It really captures the atmosphere and quirks of Mill Ave.

  3. I really like all the different pictures and how they are placed. It makes the scene almost chaotic and really shows all the craziness that goes on Mill Avenue.

  4. This piece is very busy but at the same time I feel like anything less wouldn't be enough activity. It also feels kind of disjointed to me, but i think it works with all the activity.

  5. Fantastic variety of photos. Mill has an odd characteristic of bringing out polar-opposite crowds between night and day, and you certainly captured this quality. Like you stated too, I like how you kept the photos in their rectangular/square shapes.

  6. I really like this, I know that you took tons photos of the Mill road and I really like the way you collage those pictures together.
